Champagne Taittinger
Millésime 2016
The Champagne Millésime 2016 by Maison Taittinger is produced exclusively from first-pressing grapes, in a blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir, 70% of which come from villages classified as Grand Cru and 30% from other selected villages classified as Premier Cru. Aging on its own yeasts in the cellar for over 5 years increases complexity and helps the wine to flourish.
The 2016 vintage began with a particularly mild winter with the cold arriving towards the beginning of March . Late April was marked by an unusual succession of spring frosts, and the spring itself was characterised by a lack of sunshine with very heavy rainfall July was also particularly cool and rainy, and this capricious climate required a great deal of adaptation on the part of both plants and winegrowers. In August, however, the weather was very dry, sunny and hot, even torrid, giving the vines the perfect conclusion to their growth cycle. The bunches were perfectly ripe and, although the quantity harvested was less than in previous years, the grapes were superb, producing elegant, fresh and fruity wines as true 'classics'!
The Champagne Millésime 2016 by Maison Taittinger expresses beautiful complexity: there are floral aromas of hawthorn and pleasant notes of pear, kumquat, verbena, gingerbread and white flowers, supported by a subtle hint of mint. The palate releases superb energy; a fresh, dynamic attack with floral tones such as honeysuckle combined with delicious peach and citrus notes. The finish is subtle with delicious long-lasting aromas of bitter orange peel. There is a fascinating complementarity between the elegance of the chalky soils of the Côte des Blancs and the broader shoulders of the Pinot Noir of the Montagne de Reims. It is the perfect confluence of terroir, vintage, climate and Maison Taittinger style.
