Champagne Domaine Léon

Derrière l'Église

The Champagne Derrière l’Église by Domaine Léon originates from the eponymous Lieu-Dit located near Landreville, in the most distinguished sector of the Côte des Bar. In this parcel of Pinot Noir, Clément Robert expresses the potential of the clay-limestone soil, marked by silty components, crafting a Blanc de Noirs with an essential character and a strong territorial identity. The position of the vineyard, the nature of the Kimmeridgian terroirs, and the Domaine’s artisanal approach all contribute to an aesthetic defined by tension, verticality, and precision.

The 2022 vintage serves as the base year for this edition, vinified with an approach that highlights the separate interpretation of each parcel. Fermentations occur individually and continue with an ageing period of 10 months in barrique, followed by an additional 4 months in stainless steel, before the final blend. After tirage, great care is devoted to time management: 20 months on the lees, disgorgement à la volée, and no added dosage, in Brut Nature style, to preserve the purest expression of both grape variety and site.

On the palate, Derrière l’Église opens with aromas of crisp red berries, redcurrant, and pomegranate, accented by fine spices, wet stone, and a hint of dried herbs. The palate reveals a dynamic texture driven by vibrant acidity and a sharp minerality that shapes the wine’s development. The structure is slender yet incisive, supported by ample breadth and a progression of saline notes. The finish is precise and dry, perfectly aligned with the Brut Nature profile and the intense personality of the Côte des Bar soils.

Domaine Léon

The winemaking history of the Robert family dates back to the 20’s of the XX century, but it was only in the 50’s that the family business underwent a strong rush, when Léon Robert began to vinify and produce his own Champagnes. Since then, the management of the Domaine has passed from one generation to another: first Georges Robert, son of Léon, then Olivier, and finally Clément, have perpetuated the know-how and the family traditions.

Clément, after a series of work experiences in French and international vineyards, joins the management of the company with new ideas and visions: he chooses to pay homage to his great-grandfather Léon by calling the Domaine "Léon" and has the ambition to create precise cuvées with an identity character of such an exclusive terroir.

Its vineyards are extended for nearly 8 hectares around the village of Landreville, in the Aube department and produce four of Champagne's official grape varieties: the traditional Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier, and Pinot Blanc, a historic variety of the area. Since 2019, Clément has gradually introduced organic practices in the management of vineyards and moved by his convictions has also begun to apply the principles of biodynamic viticulture.

The same approach is also applied to the work in the cellar to allow the terroir to express itself in the most natural way possible. Limited contributions and fermentation with indigenous yeasts, Clément chooses to vinify and refine the cuvée in oak wood to enhance and give a strong character to the wines, enhancing the aromatic blend. All Léon Champagnes are zero-dosed to express their authentic qualities, and are always the reflection of a single vintage.
