Champagne Dom Pérignon
Vintage 2018
Dom Pérignon pursues a creative ambition that coincides with the relentless search for a harmony capable of stirring emotion. Every creative process has its constraints and here the constraint is the year itself, an absolute commitment to bear witness to the harvest of one single year, whatever the challenge, even to the point of skipping the release of that Vintage should the harvest fail to reach the standard of the Maison. Time remains essential in this equation, since at least eight years of elaboration are needed to reach the stylistic ideal of the Maison. In the darkness of the cellars the wine undergoes an active transformation in contact with the lees, until it achieves the harmony that is its defining trait, and it is there that everything happens, with great precision, on the edge of an extraordinary balance.
This Vintage 2018 edition, the first Vintage signed by Chef de Cave Vincent Chaperon, comes from a year that seems tailor made, with a spring generous in sunlight well above the average, a summer able to surpass the temperature records of 2003 and winter water reserves that carried the vines through to flowering, before a gradual water stress heightened their concentration. The blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes comes from the earliest harvest ever recorded, begun around 20 August with record levels of ripeness.
On tasting, Dom Pérignon Vintage 2018 appears radiant and luminous, with a rich, deep transparency that unfolds over a summery fragrance of juicy orchard fruit, tropical notes of yellow kiwi and mango and vegetal nuances of ivy and balsamic herbs. On the palate it is broad and dense, enveloping, with bitter notes that expand in tension with the sweetness and a finish that opens onto a rare apricot imprint, the generous close of a luminous and extraordinarily long persistence.
