Champagne Bruno Paillard
N.P.U. Rosé 2008
The Champagne N.P.U. Rosé by Bruno Paillard is the absolute summit of the Reims Maison. It is a cuvée made only in exceptional years, following strict principles that make it the most ambitious expression of its winemaking philosophy. Extremely rare in its Rosé version, it has been made only a few times in the history of the Maison. Its grapes come from seven prestigious Grand Cru villages of Champagne, namely Oger, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Chouilly and Cramant in the Côte des Blancs, and Verzenay, Mailly-Champagne and Bouzy in the Montagne de Reims.
This edition, Vintage 2008, comes from a classic year built for long ageing. The season was cool with little sunshine, and the harvest began on 15 September with mild, dry days and cool nights, ideal conditions for a long life in the cellar. The blend combines Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes in equal parts, with the addition of vin rouge de Bouzy, which gives the wine its natural colour. Vinification and fermentation take place in small, used oak barrels, where the wines mature for their first months before tirage. This is followed by a remarkable 12 years of ageing on the lees before dégorgement. A final dosage of 3 g/l, in Extra Brut style, keeps its purity and tension.
On tasting, N.P.U. Rosé 2008 opens with an alluring smoky touch, followed by creamy notes of strawberry and meringue, rosehip and buttery shortcrust pastry, while a delicate hint of liquorice emerges with air. On the palate it is deep and chalky, with a creamy mousse of very fine bubbles. Round, ripe fruit mingles with a mineral core and subtle hints of small red berries, supported by the linear structure of the vintage in a harmonious balance that leads to a long and persistent finish. Production in a limited run of 1304 bottles.
