Champagne Hugues Godmé
Les Romaines 2012
The Champagne Les Romaines by Hugues Godmé is a Blanc de Noirs entirely devoted to Meunier, a variety that here finds one of its clearest and most characterful interpretations. The grapes come from a single 0.39-hectare plot planted in 1988 in Villedommange, a Premier Cru village suited to Meunier in the Petite Montagne de Reims, where the clay-siliceous soils offer ideal conditions to express structure, tension and a strong sense of place, the result of a biodynamic approach attentive to the natural balance of the soil.
This edition, Vintage 2012, is vinified and matured entirely in fût de chêne, following a craft-driven and non-interventionist approach, without any fining or filtration, so as to preserve the integrity of the raw material and the expressiveness of the terroir. After tirage comes a long ageing of over ten years on its own lees, which brings depth and a chiselled complexity, at the end of which the wine remains without final dosage, in a Brut Nature style, a stylistic choice geared towards essentiality and purity.
On the palate, Les Romaines 2012 shows a profile of great verticality and precision, where Meunier expresses itself with authenticity and depth, weaving its fruity flesh with a chalky and saline note that amplifies its tension. The palate is intense and coherent, sustained by a vibrant freshness and a very fine bubble that accompanies a long and rigorous evolution, closing on a savoury and deep finish that offers a sincere and uncompromising reading of the variety and of its place of origin.
