The Cuvée 150 Ans by Pommery is a Blanc de Blancs created to pay tribute to Madame Pommery, a visionary and courageous woman who, back in 1874, commissioned master cellarers Olivier Damas and Victor Lambert to create a dry style of the traditional method of sparkling wine-making to allow the quality of the fruit to shine through. Thus was born Champagne Brut.
A blend of only Chardonnay grapes from the Côte des Blancs: Chouilly, Cramant, Avize, Oger, in the Vallée de la Marne - Dizy and in the Montagne de Reims: Trépail, Villers-Marmery, Verzy, Verzenay. Over 24% vin de réserve and at least 6 years of ageing for this rare Cuvée with a low dosage of 5 g/l.
The Cuvée 150 Ans by Pommery has a light gold colour with pale green highlights. On the nose, notes of flowers and white fruits dominate but with a nice roundness that enhances the characteristics of the Chardonnay. Notes of brioche, hawthorn flower and linden blossom with a follow through of citrus and spice aromas. On the palate it is delicate and soft with a balanced tension between minerality and ripeness.
In 1858 a 39-year-old French widow became the manager of his husband's Maison of Champagne: her name was Jeanne Alexandrine Louise Mélin, maybe better known under his husband's surname: Louise Pommery. At that time, the French original tradition wanted Champagnes in their supplest version demi-sec, but Louise Pommery had a great idea: aiming at satisfying the English taste (the English public was the most devoted consumer market), in 1874 Madame Pommery asked her Chef de Cave, Victor Lambert, to create a dry Champagne, both light and elegant. Pommery Nature was born: it was the first Brut of the history, tasting like the Champagne we still taste today: its success was without borders. Right now, the Maison owns the Vranken-Pommery-Monopole group, led by the Vraken family. Since 1992 Thierry Gasco has been Chef de Cave, but Cuvée Louise is assembled with the cooperation of Prince Alain de Polignac, Louise's grandnephew and inspirer of this Champagne.
