Champagne Philipponnat
Blanc de Noirs 2021
The Champagne Blanc de Noirs by Philipponnat tells the story of the Montagne de Reims through the eyes of a House that since 1522 has interpreted Pinot Noir as the mother tongue of its terroir. In the villages of Mailly, Ambonnay, Verzenay and Mareuil-sur-Ay, among sun-kissed chalky slopes and vineyards classified as Premier and Grand Cru, an approach takes shape that values exclusively the first pressing, capable of restoring with greater purity the chalky, sunlit soul of the region.
This edition, Vintage 2021, comes from a year marked by spring frosts and a rainy summer that drastically reduced yields, requiring a rigorous selection of Pinot Noir grapes. The traditional vinification and fermentation take place partly in oak and partly in stainless steel, with malolactic fermentation avoided for a share of the wines, and after tirage comes a long ageing on the lees of more than 48 months, while the final dosage of 4.5 g/l, in Extra Brut style, preserves the balance between freshness and vinosity.
In tasting, Blanc de Noirs 2021 shows a straw-yellow hue with light golden highlights and a fine, steady perlage, accompanied by aromas of small red berries, citrus and pear that gradually open onto notes of pastry and sweet spices. On the palate the attack is taut and direct, supported by a marked freshness that balances the structure and depth of the Pinot Noir and carries the development steadily towards a saline finish of great persistence.
