Champagne Mouzon Leroux
L'atavique Magnum
The Champagne L’Atavique by Mouzon Leroux comes exclusively from vineyards located in the Grand Cru village of Verzy, in the Grande Montagne de Reims, an area renowned for its chalky soils that lend wines depth and structural firmness. This cuvée represents the most authentic expression of Sébastien Mouzon’s vision, rooted in attentive viticulture that respects natural balance and consistently enhances the distinctive character of Verzy.
This edition, based on the 2021 vintage with 45% vin de réserve from the 2019 and 2020 harvests, is the result of a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in 228-liter oak barrels, a choice that brings depth and complexity without compromising the wine’s precision. After bottling, the wine ages on its lees for at least 36 months, developing progressive aromatic layering. The dosage, under 2 g/l in Extra Brut style, preserves the integrity and transparency of the terroir.
On the palate, L’Atavique shows a bright golden hue with a fine and persistent perlage. The nose reveals notes of ripe fruit, citrus, and delicate toasted nuances, supported by a pronounced mineral backbone. It is fresh and vibrant, with a well-defined structure, precise balance, and a long finish marked by the characteristic chalk-driven tension of Verzy’s terroir.
