Champagne Krug
Collection 1995
The Champagne Collection by Krug represents a second expression in time of a precious Vintage, conceived to offer a more evolved and profound reading of the same year. It is the result of a long ageing that amplifies complexity, depth and balance, revealing new aromatic nuances and a greater expressive intensity, while keeping the original identity of the vintage fully intact. Krug Collection arises from the Maison's desire to preserve a limited number of bottles of its Vintage in ideal cellar conditions, allowing them to continue their evolutionary journey. Over time, the Chef de Caves and the tasting Committee observe the emergence of new nuances, with aromas and sensations that progressively enrich themselves, broadening the structure and complexity of the wine. When this balance reaches a new expressive dimension, the bottles are presented as Krug Collection, marking a fundamental stage in the life of the Champagne. Each bottle of Krug Collection is numbered and released by the Maison in descending order, underlining the rarity and exclusivity of this interpretation, designed to offer a unique experience and to explore the evolution of time through one of the most fascinating journeys in Champagne.
This edition, Collection 1995, comes from a year whose serenity and complexity it beautifully mirrors, now expressed with renewed intensity and depth. At the time of its creation, Rémi Krug said it reminded him of the harmony and balance of Krug 1969 and Krug 1979, while remaining faithful to itself and to its story of origin. Given the challenging circumstances of the decade in terms of weather, this is only the second Krug Collection of the Nineties, a detail that makes it all the more special. After four climatically complex harvests, 1995 was a year welcomed with relief in Champagne. A mild and rainy winter, marked by two brief frosts between January and March, was followed by a warm and sunny spring with some frost in April, while the ripening phase was accompanied by a long warm period from the end of June until the harvest, capable of bringing to full ripeness fresh, expressive grapes rich in character. The fruit of a blend of Pinot Noir (48%), Chardonnay (35%) and Meunier (17%), in this Collection release the wine benefits from an ageing on the lees for over twenty-five years before dégorgement, developing an even deeper complexity and a gustatory texture of great breadth and definition.
On tasting, Krug Collection 1995 presents itself with an intense golden colour with luminous highlights and a very fine, persistent perlage that anticipates its depth. On the nose it reveals a complex and layered profile, in which notes of cocoa, orange marmalade and biscuit intertwine with evolved nuances of pastry, candied citrus and a subtle mineral imprint that heightens its definition. On the palate emerges a vibrant contrast between hints of buttered madeleine and candied orange, which gives way to a bitter citrus zest, supported by an extraordinary acid tension. The substance is broad and deep, shaped by a dynamic balance between freshness and structure, while the close lengthens elegant and luminous, marked by a finish of rare purity on accents of lemon and cedrate.
