The Champagne Les Margannes by Barrat-Masson comes from the far south of Champagne, in the CĂ´te de SĂ©zanne, where the chalky, limestone soils of the village of Bethon give the Chardonnay a crystalline brilliance and a marked mineral tension. It is the expression of an organic and impassioned philosophy, one that places at its centre the purity of the fruit and the voice of a still little-celebrated terroir, capable of offering great elegance and verticality with natural eloquence.
This edition, 2020 harvest, is drawn solely from the coeur de cuvée, between the first and second juices, with 85% of the vinification carried out in wood and the remainder in tank. After the tirage comes a minimum ageing of 40 months on the lees, and the choice to leave it without final dosage, in a Brut Nature style, heightens its transparency.
On tasting, Les Margannes reveals a crystalline and taut profile, in which the chalky minerality of the terroir converses with delicate nuances of candied citrus, white flowers and a refined, barely hinted note of toasted bread. On the palate it wins over with balance and verticality, revealing a slender yet vibrant structure sustained by a luminous citrus freshness, leading towards a savoury finish of long persistence, where the mineral return stands out for its clarity and depth.
