Hubert Soreau

Born in Maubeuge, in the far north of France on the Belgian border, Hubert Soreau moved to Champagne with his family in the 1990s, just a short walk from the "Le Clos l'Abbé" parcel on the edge of Épernay. Planted as early as the 9th century and mentioned in the 17th by the Abbot of Saint-Martin d'Épernay, it is a site long associated with the production of Champagne. In 1993 his parents bought a small plot there, expanded by Hubert in 2003, and today the vigneron farms three separate parcels within the Clos, covering just 0.21 hectares in all.

After an early experience with a Maison de négoce, Hubert created his own single-origin Champagne, following a "single vintage, single parcel, single barrel" approach free from convention. The vines, planted entirely to Chardonnay, are pruned in the chablisienne style and grown without herbicides or pesticides, in a Clos that comes alive in spring with tulips and narcissi between the rows. Vinification and ageing take place in wooden barrels from the nearby forest of Hautvillers, with tirage sur liège, long maturation and dégorgement à la volée. A garden of Champagne waiting to be discovered.
