L'Artiste
The Champagne L'Artiste by David Léclapart is the Blanc de Blancs in which the Chardonnay of Trépail, a Premier Cru village on the eastern slopes of the Montagne de Reims, becomes deeper and more complex, like a work of art that changes its face every year. The vigneron selects different plots with each harvest to explore the endless nuances of the chalk-rich clay-limestone soils, turning every edition into a new, unique and unrepeatable chapter of his biodynamic research.
This edition, from the 2022 harvest, comes from 30 to 50 year old vines grown under certified organic farming, with vinification and fermentation split between used barriques and enamelled tanks to combine the complexity of wood with the purity of the fruit, using indigenous yeasts and without fining or filtration. After tirage comes ageing on the lees for a minimum of 36 months, and the choice to release it without final dosage preserves its tension and the truth of the terroir.
On tasting, L'Artiste shows a golden hue with greenish reflections and a fine, silky bead, opening with aromas of candied citrus, acacia blossom and chalk, enriched by delicate notes of hazelnut, fresh butter and brioche. On the palate it is broad and multifaceted, with a rich, deep structure and a creamy texture, supported by vibrant freshness and chalky minerality, leading to a long, savoury and slightly iodine-tinged finish that underlines its balance and remarkable persistence.
