Les Coupés "Franc de pied" 2020
The Champagne Les Coupés “Franc de Pied” by Nicolas Maillart is a true rarity, a Blanc de Noirs that preserves the memory of a viticulture that has almost disappeared. The Pinot Noir grapes come from a single plot planted in 1973 on its own roots in Écueil, a Premier Cru village from the Montagne de Reims, where the sandy soil protected the vines from phylloxera and made ungrafted cultivation possible. This bold agronomic choice gives an authentic and profound expression of both the grape variety and its place of origin.
This edition, Vintage 2020, belongs to the few great years in which the cuvée is produced, with grapes picked at full ripeness at harvest. Vinification and fermentation take place entirely in oak barrels for more than six months, without malolactic fermentation, in order to preserve tension and freshness. After tirage, the wine ages on the lees for at least 36 months, and the absence of a final dosage, in Extra Brut style, allows the character of the terroir to emerge with great purity.
On tasting, Les Coupés “Franc de Pied” 2020 stands out for its clean, refined and elegant profile, in which a marked savouriness enhances its personality. On the palate it is structured and persistent, combining freshness and precision in a taut balance that leads to a complex and remarkably long finish. Production in a limited run of 2,000 bottles.
