Champagne Nicolas Maillart
Mont Martin 2019
The Champagne Mont Martin by Nicolas Maillart gives voice to an often underrated grape variety and raises it to the leading role, from a historic parcel in Villers-Allerand, a Premier Cru village of the Montagne de Reims. The vines, planted in 1972 from massal selection, are deeply set in Thanetian soils rich in marl and limestone, which give the wine depth and a distinct saline streak. Respect for the natural rhythms of the vines and careful soil work, carried out with organic and biodynamic treatments and only when necessary with more traditional approaches, make this Blanc de Meunier one of the rarest and most fascinating expressions of the Domaine.
This edition, Vintage 2019, entrusts vinification and maturation entirely to wood, which gives the wine breadth, complexity and a texture of great finesse without sacrificing the freshness and original character of Meunier. After the tirage, the wine ages on its lees for 36 months, while the final dosage of 1 g/l, in Extra Brut style, discreetly supports the natural tension of the wine and lets the full expressive clarity of the terroir shine through.
On tasting, Mont Martin 2019 shows a bright golden colour with a fine and creamy perlage. The nose opens with fragrant notes of apple and citrus, enriched by delicate toasty nuances that reveal its time in wood. On the palate the attack is fresh and precise, with a silky roundness supported by a structure of great character and a very appealing saline backbone, leading to a long, chalky finish of remarkable persistence. Production in a limited run of 7,589 bottles.
