The Coteaux Champenois Pinot Noir by Vincent Cuillier reveals the deepest and least known side of Champagne, that of a still red wine crafted to authentically express the character of Pinot Noir and its terroir. The grapes come from the Les Montaubans (lieu-dit) plot, near the village of Monthelon in the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay, an area known for giving its wines finesse and depth. The result is an elegant and honest red wine that combines the purity of the variety with the sensitivity of a vigneron who pays attention to every detail of the work in the vineyard and in the cellar.

This edition, from the 2022 harvest, follows an artisanal vinification and maturation process carried out with great care, in which an 8-day maceration extracts aromas and tannins in a balanced way, giving the wine complexity and structure without altering its purity. The following ageing of about 20 months in fût de chêne enriches the aromatic profile and adds depth, highlighting the identity of Pinot Noir and the character of the Monthelon terroir.

On tasting, the wine impresses with its refinement and precise balance, with a bouquet of crisp red fruits and light spicy notes that complete its elegance. On the palate a lively freshness supports a fine, well-calibrated structure, where the tannins blend in harmoniously and lead to an elegant, persistent finish. Production in a limited run of 680 bottles, intended for those who want to discover a rare and sophisticated interpretation of Pinot Noir.

In Pouillon, some ten kilometres north of Reims on the Massif de Saint-Thierry in the Montagne de Reims, the Cuillier family farms around four and a half hectares of vines across Pouillon, Trigny and Chenay, today run by Patrick and his son Vincent. Alongside his work for the family label, since 2015 Vincent has chosen to set apart the parcels he considers most significant, including Mont Agé in Chenay and Les Voyets, the family’s most historic vineyard, to create a signature of his own. It is a vision captured in the motto «fait à la main par nature», handmade by nature, which makes him one of the most dynamic young vignerons in Champagne.

Here Vincent works in partnership with nature, guided by observation, through permaculture and agroforestry, with trees planted among the rows, cover crops, minimal tillage and home-made compost. The soils, unusual for Champagne, combine around a metre of sand over compact bedrock rich in fossils, bringing fruit, freshness and a subtle minerality. In the cellar he intervenes as little as possible, vinifying the different press fractions separately with indigenous yeasts, in steel and barrels, without fining, filtration or dosage. The result is nuanced, profound Champagnes, a new voice from the Massif de Saint-Thierry well worth discovering with curiosity.
