Les Moines Vats 2020

The Coteaux Champenois Rouge Les Moines Vats by A. Lamblot reveals a rare and surprising side of Champagne, that of its great still red wines. This appellation expresses the most intimate and terroir-driven soul of the region. The grapes come from La Sotabienne (lieu-dit), a vineyard planted in 1984 near the village of Chenay, in the Massif de Saint-Thierry, and farmed with the same artisanal and natural approach that defines the whole production of the Maison. The result is a red wine of great finesse and sincerity, able to convey with delicacy the nuances of a still little-known place.

This edition, 2020 harvest, is made entirely from Pinot Noir grapes. Vinification and maturation take place in fût de chêne for about twenty-three months, a long period that allows the wine to gain harmony, depth and a refined tannic texture without losing the freshness of the fruit.

On tasting, Les Moines Vats 2020 shows a bright and translucent ruby colour. The nose is delicate and elegant, with notes of red fruits such as cherry, raspberry and redcurrant blending with light spicy nuances and subtle oaky hints from the wood maturation. On the palate it is fine and flowing, supported by lively freshness and silky, well-integrated tannins that carry a harmonious and savoury progression through to a long and persistent finish, confirming the balance and grace of this Champagne Pinot Noir. Production in a limited run of 900 bottles.

Alexandre Lamblot represents the 13th generation of a family of vignerons rooted in Janvry since 1653 and is today one of the most compelling voices of the new artisanal Champagne. After years as a wine merchant in Paris and a formative apprenticeship alongside Jérôme Prévost of La Closerie, a master of Meunier, in 2013 he chose the path of independence and took over 3.8 hectares of family vineyards across Janvry, Gueux, Vrigny and Chenay, in the northernmost reaches of the Petite Montagne de Reims. Here Meunier, the Domaine’s leading grape, finds one of its most striking expressions, giving wines of strong personality, tension and precision.

From the very beginning Alexandre set the Domaine on a clear course, embracing biodynamics, guided by the lunar cycles, and agroforestry, with more than a hundred trees, mostly fruit trees, planted among the vines to break the logic of monoculture and restore balance to the ecosystem. The same sensibility guides the cellar, following the motto «ne rien s’interdire, ne rien s’imposer», forbid nothing and impose nothing, and extends to the smallest details, with locally sourced cork stoppers, recycled paper labels and recyclable cartons. The result is a free and sincere signature, among the most promising in Champagne, well worth discovering and following with growing attention.
