Champagne Grethen

Éole

The Champagne Éole by Grethen is named after the god of the winds in Greek mythology. It is a Blanc de Noirs that gives a pure picture of the Vallée de l'Ardre, a little-known area with great potential, where this small Domaine from Brouillet farms its vines with full respect for biodiversity. The chalky and silty soils where the vines grow give the wine a distinctive mineral tension, an authentic and recognisable expression of a terroir that is still waiting to be discovered.

This edition blends the 2019 and 2020 harvests and brings together Pinot Noir and Meunier grapes in equal parts. It is vinified and matured entirely in oak barrels for 24 months, which adds structure and depth without taking away the wine's natural freshness. After tirage it ages for 36 months on its lees before dégorgement, while the final dosage of 1 g/l, in Extra Brut style, preserves the integrity of the fruit and its expressiveness.

On tasting, Éole shows a pale gold colour and a fine, steady perlage, opening onto delicate notes of small red berries, dried flowers and citrus zest with subtle smoky touches. On the palate it is bold and vibrant, with a full, well-defined texture supported by lively, crisp acidity that carries a long, saline finish, precise, energetic and true to the style of the house. Production in a limited run of 1,724 bottles.

Grethen

Champagne Grethen was born in 1995 with Laurent and Annick Grethen, winemakers from Brouillet in the heart of the Vallée de l'Ardre, who, after having dedicated themselves to working in a cooperative for more than twenty years and having acquired new land, have made it possible the development of family brand. Since 2016, his son Antoine has assumed a fundamental role within the company, internalizing the winemaking process and converting all the processes of vineyard work to organic and biodynamic methods. In 2020, the 3 hectares of vineyards were certified in Organic Agriculture and Demeter.

The vines are grown for 80% Meunier, 10% Pinot Noir, 5% Chardonnay and 5% Petit Meslier on clayey-limestone soils. The vinification process is done in barriques with long maturation and spontaneous fermentation to reveal all the character of Meunier grape, the interventions in the cellar are minimal, as well as the contribution of sulphites: in 2020 the first cuvées were produced without added sulphites, and Antoine's goal is to continue on this path.
