Champagne C.H. Piconnet
Rosé Les Vignes de Charles
The Champagne Rosé Les Vignes de Charles pays tribute to a long line of vignerons and to the strongest bond with the vineyard, the one handed down by Charles and Hubert, grandfather and father, to the family that now runs the Domaine C.H. Piconnet in Neuville-sur-Seine, in the Côte des Bar. It is a wine that tells of attachment to the land and to the terroir of the Aube, of the belief that human work remains the starting point of every adventure, and of the search, renewed each year, for the finest possible grapes, as the words on the label recall «D’abord le raisin, car il n’y a pas de bon vin sans beau raisin».
This edition 3-21, from the 2021 harvest, is based mainly on Pinot Noir grapes, which account for 51% and are joined by a further 16% of Pinot Noir vinified as red wine, giving the wine its colour and a more pronounced fruity character, while 18% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Blanc, one of the Cépages Oubliés of Champagne, complete the assemblage, adding finesse and an original aromatic touch. Vinification and fermentation take place in stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of the fruit and the natural tension of the grapes. After tirage the wine ages on its lees for at least 30 months, and it is released with no final dosage, in Brut Nature style, to give full expression to the fruit and to the character of the year.
On tasting, the Rosé Les Vignes de Charles shows a bright salmon-pink hue with coppery highlights and a fine, lively perlage. The nose reveals notes of wild strawberry, redcurrant and raspberry, joined by hints of citrus, rose petals and a light spicy nuance. On the palate it is fresh and vertical, with crisp red fruit supported by the structure of the Pinot Noir and a savoury texture that keeps it balanced between tension and breadth through to a long, mineral and persistent finish. Production in a limited run of 843 bottles and 47 magnums.
