The Comtes de Champagne 2013 from Maison Taittinger is an exceptional Blanc de Blancs Champagne , produced exclusively with 100% Chardonnay grapes sourced from the Grands Crus of the Côte des Blancs, including Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Oger, and Mesnil-sur-Oger. Only the first press juice is used, with 5% of the wines aged for four months in new oak barrels, adding delicate toasted notes. The Champagne then matures for over ten years in the historic Gallo-Roman chalk cellars of the former Saint-Nicaise Abbey in Reims, developing extraordinary complexity and finesse.
Visually, it displays a brilliant yellow color with golden reflections, while the effervescence is lively and delicate. The nose reveals refreshing fragrances of ripe citrus and pastry notes, leading to a rich and harmonious taste. On the palate, the attack is dynamic and vibrant, with a blend of energy, salinity, and aromatic intensity, extending to a persistent finish with hints of ginger and licorice.
The Comtes de Champagne 2013 pairs beautifully with seafood appetizers, premium shellfish, or fish dishes, enhancing their delicacy. Thanks to its structure and precision, it has great aging potential, capable of evolving and becoming even more complex over time. This Champagne embodies the essence of Taittinger’s style, offering a unique sensory experience for lovers of great vintage wines.
The Maison Taittinger is synonymous with innovation and excellence, a family legacy passed down through generations. “Having our family name on a bottle means expectations and responsibilities every minute. This name conveys the knowledge of the past and a commitment to the future,” said Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger, who led the Maison for over forty years. Today, this vision is carried on by his children, Clovis and Vitalie Taittinger, who run the company with the same passion and dedication, ensuring continuity and prestige for one of the greatest names in Champagne.
The Taittinger cellars, located in the depths of Reims, lie among the remains of the ancient Benedictine abbey of Saint-Nicaise, built in the 13th century and once owned by the Comtes de Champagne. This labyrinth of galleries, crypts, and Gothic vaults, carved into the Gallo-Roman chalk caves, served as a refuge for the early Christians and later hosted the Champagne production by the monks. Today, a UNESCO World Heritage site, it preserves the history and aging of the Maison Taittinger Champagnes.
The Taittinger vineyards cover 288 hectares, making the Maison one of the largest landowners in Champagne. The estate includes 37 prestigious Crus, with a breakdown of 37% Chardonnay, 48% Pinot Noir, and 15% Meunier. Chardonnay, the cornerstone of the Taittinger style, grows in the Grands Crus of the Côte des Blancs (Cramant, Avize, Chouilly, Oger, and Mesnil-sur-Oger), while Pinot Noir comes from the most renowned areas of the Montagne de Reimsand Côte des Bar. The more resilient Meunier is mostly grown in the Vallée de la Marne, on clay and sandy soils.
The Maison Taittinger adopts sustainable viticulture practices, including vineyard cover cropping, plowing with horses, and massal selection of vines, earning the “Viticulture Durable en Champagne” and “Haute Valeur Environnementale” environmental certifications in 2017, as confirmation of its commitment to responsible and innovative farming.
