The Champagne Papillon by Ruppert-Leroy is a Blanc de Noirs made from 100% Pinot Noir, sourced from a massal selection that extends the Fosse-Grely vineyard, located in the village of Essoyes, in the southern part of the Côte des Bar. The name “Papillon”, which in French means butterfly, precisely evokes the spirit of this cuvée: a wine of great lightness and elegance, yet simultaneously deep and structured, one of the most intense expressions offered by the Domaine. The vines, planted in the early 1980s, grow in clay-limestone soils, predominantly red clay, and benefit from a favorable south/south-west exposure. The work in the vineyard follows the principles of certified biodynamics (since 2014) and is based on a regenerative agricultural ecosystem, including livestock, self-produced compost, biodynamic preparations, and horticulture, all within a holistic and self-sufficient vision.
The cuvée is based on the 2022 vintage and is vinified according to the Domaine’s natural philosophy: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, no fining or filtration, and long maturation on fine lees in 225-liter barriquesand 500-liter demi-muids for about 9 months, followed by natural malolactic fermentation. The wine then ages for a minimum of 18 months on the lees in bottle, before manual disgorgement à la volée, with no liqueur de tirage or added sulfites, in full brut nature style.
On tasting, Papillon stands out for its wide and refined aromatic profile. On the nose, it reveals ripe white fruit, citrus, and subtle mineral and saline notes. On the palate, it is balanced, with an enveloping structure, lively freshness, and a long-lasting finish that reflects the pure identity of its terroir.
This Blanc de Noirs cuvée represents one of the most authentic and charismatic interpretations of Pinot Noir by Ruppert-Leroy: a natural, artisanal, and deeply territorial Champagne, capable of winning over those most attentive to the true essence of the vineyard.
The Domaine Ruppert-Leroy is located in Essoyes, in the heart of the Côte des Bar, one of the emerging areas of Champagne. Founded in 1998 by Emmanuel Ruppert and Bénédicte Leroy, the Domaine is now a reference point for those seeking authentic Champagne. Its approach is based on practices of natural and biodynamic viticulture, certified since 2014. The vines are planted on clay and limestone soils, which give the wines a unique minerality. The Domaine cultivates small parcels in different areas of the Côte des Bar, showcasing the potential of varieties such as Pinot Noirand Chardonnay.
The work in the vineyard is crucial for the quality of the cuvées from Ruppert-Leroy. The approach is completely respectful of the terroir and free from intensive or chemical agricultural practices. The agricultural management integrates compost production, animal husbandry, and the use of biodynamic preparations. This self-sufficient agricultural ecosystem is the foundation for producing wines that faithfully reflect the terroir. Each individual parcel is treated with the utmost care to preserve biodiversity and the natural balance of the soil, allowing the plants to fully express their potential.
In the cellar, the approach is artisanal and minimalist. Spontaneous fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, with no addition of commercial yeasts, clarification, or filtration. The wines are aged in wooden barrels, including 225-liter barriques and 500-liter demi-muids, to ensure complexity and finesse. Each cuvée follows the Brut Nature philosophy, with no addition of sulfites or liqueur de tirage, allowing the wine to remain pure and transparent. The result is Champagne appreciated for its freshness, elegance, and the ability to reflect the authenticity of the terroir.
