R.H. Coutier

The Domaine R.H. Coutier, founded in 1809, is a historic family estate in Ambonnay, a prestigious Grand Cru of the Montagne de Reims. The family has been rooted in the village since 1619, and for over five generations they have crafted Champagnes that embody the dual soul of the terroir: the structural richness of Pinot Noir and the vibrant purity of Chardonnay, introduced here in a pioneering move in 1946.

Today, the vineyard covers 9.3 hectares divided into about 40 parcels, with an average vine age of 38 years. Most of the land is planted to Pinot Noir (70%), complemented by Chardonnay (30%), which in this terroir achieves a distinctive mineral elegance. The chalky-limestone soils with clay components and southeast-facing slopes provide wines of remarkable structure, depth, and freshness, a true expression of Ambonnay’s identity.

The Domaine is now led by Nathalie and her son Antoine, heirs of René Coutier. Their winemaking philosophy follows the principle of “as little as possible,” with minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar to preserve the essence of the terroir. In conversion to organic farming since 2020, R.H. Coutier employs respectful vinification, careful use of malolactic fermentation, and extended lees aging, resulting in balanced, vinous, and complex Champagnes.
