The Champagne Blanc de Noirs 2019 by Philipponnat is a masterful expression of the House’s expertise in blending and vinifying Pinot Noir, sourced from Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards in the Montagne de Reims, Mareuil-sur-Ay, Avenay, and Aÿ. The 2019 harvest, blessed with ideal conditions, yielded grapes of outstanding quality, marked by a perfect balance of natural acidity and sugar.
The winemaking process follows a traditional approach designed to preserve freshness and energy, while avoiding premature oxidation. Part of the wines mature in oak barrels, while the remaining 71% age in stainless steel tanks, with no malolactic fermentation, in order to retain tension and aromatic precision. After bottling, the wine rests on its lees for at least four years, developing remarkable depth and complexity. The Extra Brut dosage, kept at 4.5 g/l, enhances purity of style and the harmony between vinosity and elegance.
On the palate, the Blanc de Noirs 2019 displays a bright golden hue with delicate pink highlights, typical of Pinot Noir. The nose opens with refined floral notes of violet and acacia blossom, followed by ripe fruit aromas of apricot, strawberry, and morello cherry. The palate is generous and expansive, with juicy layers of ripe red berries. The finish is fresh and finely balanced, with subtle spicy nuances of anise and licorice, sealing a vintage of rare intensity and elegance.
In the heart of Premier and Grand Cru, the maison is proud of its own 20 hectares out of the most beautiful vineyards of Pinot Noir over the territory of Mareuil, Aÿ, Mutigny e Avenay, facing south and lying on pure chalk, as well as the old and renowed vines of Clos des Goisses and Lèon. Vinification follows the most natural methods and the fermentation temperatures are fresh, not too cold, so as to preserve the natural aromatic taste of the wine. The malolactic fermentation is brought the its end, except for the stongest wines, such as the Clos des Goisses. Dorages are on average particularly low, so sugar cannot disguise the balance between freshness and vinousity.
