The Champagne Krug Grande Cuvée represents the top philosophy of Krug, based on handcrafting and know-how: a blend of 120 wines coming from more than 10 vintages. Its extraordinary fineness is due to a resting period of 6 more years in the caves. It takes more than 20 years to create a bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée: the first Cuvée de Prestige reproduced every year, going beyond the concept of vintage.
This Bottle spent at least 7 years in Krug's cellars developing its particular expression and elegance, receiving its cork in winter 2017 - 2018.
This bottle belongs to the 167ème Édition, a blend of 191 wines from 13 different years. The youngest dates back to and the oldest to . Every glass poured from it is the fruit of more than 23 years of careful craftsmanship. Krug Grande Cuvée 167ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2011. This atypical year was divided into two parts: high temperatures up until the beginning of May resulted in blossoms three weeks early, followed by cold, wet weather with low sun. There was concern that the grapes might be overly mature but a three-day heat wave stopped maturation, while subsequent rains refreshed them. The year’s unusual weather led to the second earliest harvest since 1822. In the end, the grapes were healthy and gave rise to wines with a surprising structure and remarkable aromas. While the Chardonnays did not reveal their habitual freshness, it was a year for beautifully balanced Pinot Noir wines, particularly those from plots in Mareuil sur Aÿ.
In order to complement the wines of the year, the House drew on its extensive library of reserve wines, a careful selection of which make up 42% of the final blend. A number of Meuniers from different years brought freshness, while certain Chardonnays and wines from plots on the Montagne de Reims harvested in the 1990s brought the breadth and roundness so essential to every Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée. The final composition of this bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée is: 47% Pinot Noir, 36% Chardonnay and 17% Meunier.

The Krug Maison interprets the extraordinary adventure of Joseph Krug, a determined man, without compromises, who understood that Champagne essence is the delight itself. He wanted to offer his Clients the best of the Champagne delight, every year, regardless of the climate change. Joseph Krug founded the first and unique Maison able to offer a high quality Champagne. In 1843, when his son was still too young to manage the Maison de Champagne, Joseph Krug wrote down his principles and passed them on to the Maison in a cherry-red leaflet. That leaflet is not only of historic importance for the Maison, but also a a man's last will embracing his family and the Champagne region as well. The Maison Krug's philosophy is about grapes selection from single parcels, expressing their own features and soil characteristics; no hierarchy is needed and all vines are taken into consideration, sometimes even parcels as small as a garden. The Maison is looking for stron characters and a contrast between grapes coming from different lots. Krug is the only Maison de Champagne welcoming and representing all vines in excellent wines.
