The Champagne 1683 by Crété Chamberlin pays homage, with its name, to the birth year of its founder, Henry Crété Chamberlin. Composed of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Meunier, this Champagne comes from grapes selected from the prestigious Grands and Premiers Crus terroirs. The Chardonnay vines have deep roots in historic parcels (Lieux-Dits) located in the Côte des Blancs, while the Meunier comes mainly from carefully selected vineyard plots in the Coteaux sud d’Épernay, within the Vallée de la Marne. The base vintage is 2017, with 26% of vin de réserve from the 2016 vintage. Vinification takes place in stainless steel vats, without fining or filtration, undergoing partial malolactic fermentation and maturation on lees for 36 months. The dosage is minimal, with just 4.5 g/l (Extra Brut), enhancing the purity and identity of the terroir.
In tasting, Champagne 1683 reveals an extraordinary freshness on the nose, with notes of ripe pear, meringue, and citrus, complemented by hints of yeast and baked goods, alongside fruity and floral aromas. On the palate, it appears mature and vibrant, with a lively effervescence, resulting in a refined, precise, and clean expression, with a fine and persistent perlage.
Perfectly paired with seafood appetizers, shellfish risottos, and mixed fried dishes, this Champagne stands out for its aromatic complexity and gastronomic versatility, making it an excellent choice for multiple occasions.
The Crété-Chamberlin family history dates back to 1683, when Henry Chamberlin, originally from Moussy, dedicated himself to viticulture at the age of 20, owning vineyards in the terroirs of Moussy, Pierry, and Vinay. For nearly two centuries, eight generations followed, cultivating grapes for Champagne production. In 1878, the marriage between Eugène Crété and Hortense Chamberlin united their vineyards, creating a new family legacy.
By the late 1800s, the family began vinifying their own wine, founding Domaine Crété-Chamberlin in 1910. Under Henry’s leadership, production grew to 32,000 bottles by 1932, solidifying the brand. After World War II, Marcel Crété and his wife Odette focused on vineyard work until, in 1960, the name Marcel Crété replaced Chamberlin. In the 1980s, Roland and Micheline invested in a modern winery, advancing the Domaine’s evolution.
In 2010, Mathieu Crété returned after studying oenology in Avize, followed in 2020 by his sister Blandine. Today, they manage 84 plots, with vines averaging 60 years old, adopting an organic and biodynamic approach without restrictive certifications. Their Champagne remains balanced and authentic, honoring 14 generations of tradition while preserving their unique signature through time.
